We Tried Pabst Blue Ribbon Hard Coffee

The boozy caffeinated beverage is currently available. https://www.foodandwine.com/news/pabst-blue-ribbon-hard-coffee-taste-test

By Bridget Hallinan

Earlier this month, Pabst Blue Ribbon (otherwise known as PBR) turned heads when it announced its latest productnot a new lager, but hard coffee. With 5 percent ABV, Pabst said that the drink is “among the first of its kind in the industry,” combining Arabica and Robusta coffee beans, milk, and malt beverage to create a boozy version of your morning cup of joe. It’s meant to taste like “vanilla infused premium iced coffee,” and we’ve also seen comparisons to Yoo-hoo, the popular creamy chocolate milk drink. But the concept of hard coffee—in a can, nonetheless—made us curious, so this week, PBR sent over samples so we could decide for ourselves.

Armed with two cans of the new hard coffee, we gathered a few editors and gave it a try. At the first crack of a can, we were instantly reminded of Baileys—it smells like coffee, but with the distinctive chocolatey, creamy notes signature to the Irish cream liqueur. The first sip was also reminiscent of Baileys, as well as Kahlua, and we definitely noticed the vanilla coming through, too. One editor compared it to a “thicker, malt Starbucks frappuccino”—the bottled kind you’d find in stores—and said they’d mix it with milk and ice to make a spiked latte; another said they’d take it a step further and mix it with ice in a blender, plus a shot of espresso for good measure. Personally, I could see the drink being popular at tailgates, especially early morning ones. After all, sports fans tend to drink and sip on coffee in the parking lot before heading to the game, so why not do both at the same time?

BELL’S LIGHT HEARTED HAS ALL THE HEART OF TWO HEARTED BUT ONLY 110 CALORIES, 3.7% ALC/VOL.

Bell’s Light Hearted is a Lo-Cal IPA with only 110 calories.

The eagerly awaited Light Hearted Ale is now available!

A Low-Cal IPA with only 110 calories, Light Hearted is the newest year-round release from Michigan’s largest independent craft brewery.

With a 3.7% ABV, it is the latest addition to Bell’s Hearted family (Two Hearted is available year-round; Double Two Hearted will return in August).

“We did not just set out to make a lighter version of Two Hearted. We wanted to brew the best tasting, low-cal IPA we could. It all begins with quality ingredients. Balance, hoppiness and aroma are all there,” said Larry Bell, Bell’s president and founder.

While Light Hearted may not share the exact ingredient list as Two Hearted (Bell’s flagship IPA is brewed with 100% Centennial hops), it does share many of the defining characteristics that make Two Hearted what it is.

“One thing we did not do, was take a shortcut; no corn and no rice. Our goal was to deliver the same quality you would expect from a Bell’s beer, but with a lower ABV and with less calories,” Bell said.

Light Hearted is brewed with Centennial and Galaxy hops with only 110 calories per 12 oz. serving. It cuts down on the things many beer drinkers don’t want, but keeps everything about Two Hearted they love.

This new year-round beer was the first release in Bell’s General Store Exclusive Series; limited, small batch releases only available at Bell’s pub, the Eccentric Cafe, and its General Store. Focused on innovation, the GSE series serves as a testing ground for new recipes, small batch re-releases of fan favorites and other experimental brews.

Light Hearted is now available in cans (12 oz. packaged in 6-packs) and on draft.

Bell’s Two Hearted Ale, the brewery’s flagship IPA, has been named the No. 1 Beer in America three years in a row by members of the American Homebrewers Association. It has been at the top of numerous “Best of” lists and consistently ranks as one of the most popular craft beers on the market.
