Summit Brewing Releases House Party Variety Pack Vol. 2

Thursday, September 3, 2020, By Summit Brewing

It’s that time of year again. The weather begins to cool, night sets in a little earlier and we begin to trade our lackadaisical lakeside lounging for indoor gatherings. But, as with everything in 2020, our house parties may not look like what they used to. Instead of dancing cheek-to-cheek, we may be dancing on our own this fall. However, we at Summit Brewing are here to ensure that while you may be dancing with yourself, at the very least you won’t be dancing empty handed.

Summit House Party Variety Pack is returning for its second year. And this year, in addition to great brews, we’ve got some great tracks to go with your solo shindig. So, drop the needle and sip some suds!

Track 1. Don’t Stand So Close To Me

Of all our beers in the House Party Variety Box, our Summit Sága IPA just may be the only one aggressive enough to call out any party-goer not abiding by the 6-feet rule. With its combination of Rakau, Citra, Centennial, Amarillo and Bravo hops, our signature IPA is assertive and bold. While this epic hop mix creates bitter flavors, tropical aromas of kiwi, passion fruit and apricot add a balanced sweetness. So, while Sága IPA may not hesitate to tell you to back up, they’ll still do it nicely.

Track 2. Tubthumbing

Fans of the 90’s band Chumbawamba may recall this hit in which the singer shares stories of “taking a lager drink.” Well, we’ve got that covered. The lone lager in our House Party Variety Pack, Summit Keller Pils, is a lager you definitely want to drink. Highly awarded and favored among our brewing staff, Keller Pils is a traditional, unfiltered German Pils. Light flavors of citrus, honey and melon blend with a slight floral notes and bready aromas to create a clean, balanced finish. It’s so good, it may leave you singing songs that remind you of the good times!

Track 3. I Will Survive

After a brief summer hiatus, Summit Great Northern Porter has returned! The embodiment of this ballad, Great Northern Porter not only is coming back after a break but also is one of just two beers we continue to brew from our original 1986 line-up (Summit Extra Pale Ale being the other). This slightly sweet, slightly bitter brew maintains its roasted malt flavors with notes of caramel, coffee and chocolate. We are switching things up slightly, as this porter will now only be available in cans. Still the same great taste but with a sleek new look, Great Northern Porter is currently available exclusively in the House Party Variety Pack. In October, look for it in it’s own packaging!

Track 4. Someday, We’ll Be Together

As fans of our Summit Dark Infusion Coffee Milk Stout know, it’s important not to give up hope that one day things will return to normal. Originally brewed as part of our Unchained Series in 2016, Dark Infusion is the only Unchained beer to ever make a comeback. It was so popular in fact, it’s been brewed three times since. In its fourth reincarnation, we’ve changed up the recipe slightly. This year, the cold-brew coffee is provided by Minneapolis’ Big Watt Beverage. Available exclusively in the House Party Variety Pack, this brew is a reminder to us all that while we may have to wait – longer than we may want to – we will be together again.

Summit House Party Variety Pack is available now.

A German tradition we’re extremely proud of. Schell’s Oktoberfest is available now!

As August Schell Octoberfest Transitions into Season, New leadership is on Tap at the Brewery

New leadership on tap as Schell’s Brewery turns 160

Schell’s Oktoberfest is a Märzen (March) Festbier with a perfect balance of Pale, Munich, and Vienna malts which create its toasty backbone. In German tradition, this beer was originally brewed in March and laid down in the caves before the summer weather rendered brewing impossible. Stocks would be drawn upon heavily during the summer, and exhausted by the time October hit.

Keeping with true German tradition, Schell’s beer is brewed just once a year and leads us into the season’s Oktoberfest celebrations. New Ulm has the highest reported population in the United States with German ancestry so it is only fair that we strap on our traditional German garb and have a little fun (and some beer, of course). Next time you reach for an Oktoberfest, remember, it tastes best while dressed in your lederhosen!

FOOD PAIRINGS

Those who have had the opportunity to experience Oktoberfest in Munich will no doubt have vivid memories of the “halb hendl” or rotisserie chickens they serve with a side of French fries.

You will also find pork knuckles, wurst, kraut, assorted sausages, and salted white onions. Germans have perfected the art of pork and beer pairings by means of the sausage. The sweeter, toasty malt flavors and relatively subtle hopping pair well with rich but not strongly flavored pork. Soaking or cooking the brats in beer will only strengthen that marriage of flavors.

Moving away from the traditional pairings, Oktoberfest is a very versatile beer. Steaks and burgers fresh off the grill will pair nicely as long as they aren’t drowning in sauces.

Sweet-sauce pizza also works well, as the bready malts pair nicely with the tomato sauce and crust, while the crisp carbonation and light hops keep if from being cloying.

For cheese pairings, try highlighting the nutty, malty flavors of Oktoberfest with creamy, earthy, nutty varieties like robust Swiss, Emmental, and Gruyére.

Every beer has a story, here’s Punkin Ale…

A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, brown sugar and spices. As the season cools, this is the perfect beer to warm up with.

Punkin Ale is named after the seriously off-centered southern Delaware extravaganza Punkin Chunkin (check out some of these Discovery Channel videos of Punkin Chunkin, you gotta see it to believe it!). In fact, Punkin Ale made its debut as it claimed first prize in the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Contest. Yes, that was a full 6 months before we even opened our doors for business!

Since its debut, we’ve brewed Punkin Ale each and every fall. It is released right around Sept. 1 each year. When you find it, grab some extra because it’s usually gone by Thanksgiving.

The newest trend in craft beer is one you’d never have predicted a decade ago: light, low-calorie IPAs. Brewers began pushing the caloric limits of wheat beers, sours, and lagers several years ago, but they’ve only recently tackled (with success) the most difficult style to brew with a minimal calorie count. Scaling down the frequently boozy, often hazy, and always pungent ale into a lighter, more refreshing package is an incredible feat of beer engineering. https://www.popularmechanics.com/home/food-drink/a33368203/best-low-calorie-ipa/

Below are some excellent choices for your next visit to the pub or gathering in your back yard!

Cheers!

Grain Belt Nordeast is celebrating ten years in the neighborhood with a new look and announcing the “Fill the Fridge” contest with the grand prize winner receiving beer for a decade.

Ten years ago Grain Belt brewed their first batch of Nordeast. Now it’s Grain Belt’s turn to stock yours.

A hundred lucky Nordeast fans will receive a silver can that not only will fill your fridge with three cases of Grain Belt, but will enter you in to win beer for a decade. That’s right, a decade!

There are multiple ways to enter below. Good luck on your hunt for the silver can!

1.) Purchase a Silver Anniversary Edition package at your local liquor store and hope you find the silver can.

2.) Take a photo of your beer fridge highlighting your Grain Belt, merchandise, logo, etc. and post the picture to social media using #FillTheFridge in your caption.

Finders and winners of a silver can will win three cases of Nordeast and be entered in for the chance to win beer for a decade!

We’ve heard some comparisons to Willy Wonka as the hunt for silver cans began. And we’re not mad about that.
