This week I decided to share one of my favorite winter beers and the most popular winter beer in the United States, Samuel Adams Winter Lager. Samuel Adams was the first brewery to ever release seasonal offerings. These beers quickly soared to the top based on the quality and consistency of the beer year after year.

Bismarck’s first craft brewery is getting bigger to meet the growing demand for its beer.  Laughing Sun Brewing Company, which opened its doors in downtown Bismarck in 2012, expanded its operations. Thus, allowing us to form a distribution partnership with co-owners Todd Sattler and Mike Frohlich. We’re delighted to distribute their wonderful beers in our North Dakota territory.

“This community was introduced to fresh craft beer at our small downtown brewery.  They liked it, told their friends and family about it, and ignited a demand for our beers across the state.  Now we’re excited to grow and meet that demand.”

The centerpiece of Laughing Sun’s new Front Street brewery is a manufacturing facility that includes a new 20-barrel brew system – a large increase in capacity from its current 3.5-barrel system…..

“I’ve been loading our beer into my truck every week and delivering it to customers in Bismarck, Fargo and Minot and I’m tired,” smiled Frohlich.  “We really don’t want to start a trucking company.  We have awesome professional distributors in our state who, thankfully, know our beers, have relationships with the places we’d like to take it, and are willing help us do that.”  Although Laughing Sun initially will focus on distribution across North Dakota, it has reserved space in the new building to accommodate additional fermentation tanks so that it may serve regional markets beyond North Dakota as its distribution business grows.  “North Dakota wants more access to great local craft beer.  We’ll start at home, in North Dakota, and if all goes well, move outward from there,” said Frohlich.

If you’re like most parents, you’ll plan on bellying up to the counter and picking through your kid’s Halloween candy once they go to bed. You may also be in need of a drink after all that trick-or-treating. We’ve got you covered, below is a great article and video from Molly Miller paring some Halloween candy with different styles of beer. I have also included a Bell’s Brewing Company candy pairing. Enjoy!

9 Must-Try Halloween Candy + Beer Pairings

By: Molly Miller

http://www.hgtv.com/design-blog/entertaining/halloween-candy-and-beer-pairings

After the trick-or-treaters are gone and the kids are in bed, there’s a good chance you’ll have some leftover Halloween candy sitting around. But before you sink into the couch with a cold one and a handful of candy, consider pairing your beer of choice with a complementary sweet. We promise it’ll make that extra candy (and the beer) taste even better.

Porter + Chocolate Candies

The porter’s roasty, malty notes make chocolate candies taste even richer and “chocolat-ier.”

IPA + Cinnamon Candies

Hoppy, citrusy, floral IPAs taste downright refreshing after throwing back a handful of cinnamon candies.

Oktoberfest + Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

A full-bodied, toasty and slightly hoppy Oktoberfest complements the richness of a peanut butter and chocolate candy.

Cider + Caramel Apple Suckers

Crisp and refreshing ciders can be sweet or dry and tart making them excellent companions to juicy, green apple-flavored lollipops with chewy, buttery caramel centers.

Raspberry Ale + Dark Chocolate

Tart effervescence from fruit lambics provides a sweet contrast to dark chocolates’ bitterness. There’s a reason fruit and chocolate pairings are so popular.

Pilsner + Red Licorice

With citrus and herbal notes, German pilsners bring out the fruity flavors in red licorice while hops cut the sweetness.

Pumpkin Ale + Chocolate Marshmallows

Warm and toasty with notes of clove, cinnamon and allspice, pumpkin ales are the perfect companions to this candy’s vanilla and chocolate flavors.

Cream Ale + Candy Corn

Candy corn’s intense sweet taste needs a light, refreshing, low-hopped brew, like a cream ale, to wash down all the sugar.

Saison + Gummy Candy

Chewy, fruity gummy candies need a slightly tart, semi-dry beer, like a saison, with only a hint

Guided by geeky imagination, influenced by sub-pop culture and never satisfied with the status quo, B. Nektar aims to bring a modern twist on mead as well as diversify craft mead, cider and beer.

Nektar Meadery was founded in 2006 by Brad and Kerri Dahlhofer, with the help of their good friend Paul Zimmerman. Brad has been an avid homebrewer since 1998, making beers, meads, ciders and wine for his own enjoyment. When Brad and Kerri got married in 2005, he made a mead to toast with at their wedding and received great reviews from the guests. Jokingly, he said that he’d someday open a meadery. Paul, a long-time friend and fellow homebrewer, soon began making meads along with Brad in the Dahlhofers’ basement. Their meads quickly began winning awards at homebrewing competitions

In the summer of 2006, Kerri was laid-off from her job. While sipping a glass of vanilla cinnamon mead made by Brad, she thought, “Why not try to sell this?” It was then that the three decided to take their mead making to the next level. In the spring of 2008, Brad too fell victim to layoffs, and the three worked night and day to prepare for their opening. After nearly two years since its inception, B. Nektar finally opened it’s doors on August 2, 2008 (National Mead Day).

B.Nektar’s session meads and hard ciders are now shaping the craft revolution.  To say it’s been a long road from the home-brewing days would be a tremendous understatement but B. Nektar continues to increase their production capacity and is currently the largest meadery in the U.S.A.

B.Nektar was the first meadery to join the ranks on the top 100 best breweries in the world by Ratebeer.com, and has remained there since 2013.

Proud of this story as they may be, they put a lot of effort into not taking themselves too seriously.

As the leaves change, so does the beer selections in the aisle and tap handles. It’s a good thing. Not only do seasonal brews offer new flavors from your regular beers, they also ensure you’re getting the freshest beer possible. So crack open one, or a few, of our favorite fall beers.

Today, I am going to showcase two of our seasonal fall offerings from Bell’s Brewery; Octoberfest and Best Brown Ale. Both of these beers are reminiscent of the traditional fall foliage colors – deep ruby to brown, golden hues and with some red tones. The beers taste do not disappoint either with a malty/toasty back bone, yet sessionable, lending a nice transition before winter beers hit the market.

Odell Brewing Company Rupture, a Fresh Grind Ale

It’s hard to believe that it has been almost a full year since Odell Brewing Co. released Rupture, a Fresh Grind Ale. This beer continues to be a hit with consumers. Rupture is available on draught and 12oz can package.

Rupture introduces a unique process where whole-flower hops are ground up on-site at the brewery moments before they’re added to the beer.

“It’s no secret that we love hops. While we work with both whole flower and pellet hops across our other beers, Rupture gave us an opportunity to try something really different,” said Brendan McGivney, COO. “By grinding the hops, we unlock an unparalleled amount of hop aroma. We built the recipe around highlighting that aroma, letting the hops take center stage without overwhelming bitterness.”

Rupture embodies Odell’s commitment to get the most out of each and every hop and follows in the footsteps of other innovative hop-forward beers like Odell IPA, Myrcenary Double IPA, and Drumroll American Pale Ale. Rupture comes in at 6.0% ABV and is now available across Odell’s distribution footprint.

About Odell Brewing – Odell Brewing is an independent, family and employee owned regional craft brewery. Since 1989, the culture of family and collaboration has thrived, fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted and innovative brews. Odell Brewing is committed to providing exceptional service to its customers while making positive contributions to their co-workers and community through its outreach and charitable giving programs. Odell Brewing was named the “Best Medium Sized Company to Work For” in Colorado in 2015 and is the 27 th largest craft brewery in the United States.
