We have lots of exciting things brewing with Lagunitas this year including; Undercover Investigation Shut Down Ale available now, Limited Release Lucky 13, Limited Release Little Sumpin Extra, along with several beers from the 2017 OneHitter’s Series. This is just the tip of the iceberg on what’s to come from our friends at Lagunitas.

The boys at  Lagunitas have lots of stories to tell, in fact, some of their stories and events are captured in their beers. Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale is a perfect example of passing along one of their stories. In remembrance of the St. Patrick’s Day Massacre, 12 years ago, we gathered some survivors to tell the story of how the Shut-Down all went down… …Click on the Video!

Undercover the story

We brewed this especially bitter ale in remembrance of the 2005 St Patrick’s Day Massacre and in commemoration of our 20-day suspension that followed. The ABC conducted an undercover investigation of our brewery, finding us guilty of operating a “Disorderly House.” as well as “Moral Turpitude’… we had to look that up… it is defined as “devoid of social morals — we disagree! We did the crime. We did the time. We got the braggin’ rights.

Now Available Year-Round 6pk Bottles:  Lagunitas Sucks (Brown Shugga’ Substitute)

E.K. Ross would have enjoyed our suffering in 2010/2011 when we saw we couldn’t brew our Brown Shugga. But in that time of deepest despair, as is common to artists everywhere…broke, hungover, abandoned by the muse, and prepared to take a job at Arby’s, we found in that darkness, the spark of inspiration that would yield up this nearly sanctified recipe!

We suck! Find out why with our brewmonster Jeremy Marshall and the #mouthfeels of our Rye Double-ish IPA, Lagunitas Sucks

(Press Release)

BOSTON—For the first time, the brewers at Sam Adams have completely reformulated a popular flagship beer: Rebel IPA.  After more than four years, the brewers undertook what they called “Project Lupulus,” an experiment that takes advantage of hops that were not readily available or have been newly cultivated since Rebel IPA first launched in 2014. As part of this project, the brewers collaborated, starting in 2013, with a hop breeder in Yakima Valley, WA to create a new hop variety proprietary and exclusive to Sam Adams called HBC 566. After months of experimenting with dozens of trial batches at the Boston Brewery, the brewers are now ready to release the new Rebel IPA recipe which is brewed with HBC 566 and another new experimental hop variety for bittering, HBC 682.  Rebel IPA now has a more intense juicy, tropical and citrus flavor supported by a leaner body and a crisp, clean finish to optimize the hop character.

Slide1

About Rebel Reborn

So what changes? Paying homage to the original recipe, Rebel IPA is brewed with a few of the original hop varieties including Cascade, Centennial, Simcoe® and Chinook. For the 2017 release, the brewers added Mosaic hops, alongside HBC 566, a new hop proprietary to Sam Adams, and HBC 682, a new, experimental bittering hop.

Project Lupulus refers to the scientific name of a hop, Humulus lupulus, and its special lupulin glands which are the fundamental source of flavor, bitterness, and aroma in hops. For Project Lupulus, the brewers looked to optimize the flavor of each hop variety by changing up the blend and ratio of hops for the new Rebel IPA. Ultimately, seven hops were chosen for their unique character, including:

  • HBC 566: A Sam Adams proprietary hop variety, HBC 566 adds a touch of lemon/lime, orange and eucalyptus flavor that can be found with the addition of this exclusive hop variety.
  • HBC 682: Experimental hop HBC 682 is used solely as a bittering hop in Rebel IPA to impart a pleasant bitterness with a strong and earthy aroma
  • Mosaic: New to Rebel IPA, Mosaic hops impart tropical, fruity, and pines notes. In 2011, Sam Adams was one of the first breweries to experiment with Mosaic hops in a collaboration beer with Dogfish Head called SAVOR Flowers;
  • Cascade: A leading hop in the new Rebel IPA, Cascade hops impart floral, spicy, citrus, and grapefruit character;
  • Simcoe®: A staple of IPAs, Simcoe hops impart a strong piney character as well as apricot and citrus notes;
  • Centennial: Centennial hops are intensely floral with hints of wood and a medium citrus character;
  • Chinook: Chinook hops provide a piney character and a light spice note;

To dial up the hop impression, the newly reborn Rebel IPA removed caramel malt from the grain bill and now is brewed only with Samuel Adams special two-row malt blend.  By removing the caramel malt, Rebel IPA’s body is less malty, resulting in a cleaner, brighter IPA with more tropical, citrus, and pine-forward notes.

Founder & Brewer of Samuel Adams, Jim Koch, on Reformulating Rebel IPA:

“This is the first time we’ve significantly changed the recipe of a flagship beer.  As hop varieties evolve, we want to use the new varieties to keep brewing the best beer possible,” said Jim Koch. “Like with the original Rebel IPA recipe, this release isn’t a palate-scorching hop-bomb. Our goal was to showcase the intricate aromas and flavors of hops, especially with new, experimental hop varieties HBC 566 and HBC 682. Not that long ago, it was a challenge just to find quality, flavorful hops and now, we’re developing our own proprietary hop with unparalleled lemony-lime, orange and eucalyptus notes. It’s wild to think how far the brewing industry has come and that today, a beer can evolve.”

Nano Brewery Manager, Megan Parisi, on Rebel IPA test batches:

“Even before we started brewing Rebel IPA, we were exploring the many varieties of hops and how they affect the flavor of a beer with Project Lupulus,” said Brewer Megan Parisi, who manages the nano brewery. “We averaged at least one new test brew in the nano each week since we started tinkering with the Rebel IPA recipe and our new hop varieties. It was awesome being able to brew with a new hop variety that had never been used. After dozens of test batches of single hop brews, various blends, and of course, taste testing, it is a pleasure to finally share our new Rebel IPA recipe with drinkers.”

About the Rebel IPA Family

Rebel IPA was the first beer that originated in the Samuel Adams Nano Brewery, the epicenter of experimentation for new beers located within the Boston Brewery. When Samuel Adams launched Rebel in 2014, the brew became the most successful release of a craft beer brand [1]. Now, IPAs are the primary driver of craft volume growth1. Since 2014, the Rebel family has expanded to include Rebel Rouser Double IPA, Rebel Grapefruit IPA, and Rebel Juiced IPA.

Samuel-Adams-Rebel-Juiced-IPA-cans

In January 2017, Samuel Adams Rebel Juiced IPA, a West Coast IPA infused with mango, will be now available in cans and bottles. At 55 IBUs, the brewers selected the hop varieties based on their tropical aromas and juicy flavors rather than for their bitterness. Zeus hops were used in the kettle and Mosaic and Mandarina hops were used to dry hop. The result is a medium-bodied beer with a slightly veiled golden color that brings a big tropical aroma of guava, passionfruit and mango.

PRESS RELEASE

Summit Double IPA Returns, India-Style Black Ale Debuts

Brewery Resolves to Enjoy More Quality IPAs

ST. PAUL, Minn. (January 3, 2017) – Folks make all sorts of resolutions around this time of year. Here at Summit, ours is to enjoy more delicious, high-quality IPAs. Care to join us?

Your first chance comes this week with our just-released Summit Double IPA. Blending a number of New Zealand hops with new and experimental varieties from the U.S. and Germany, Double IPA is supported by a heritage barley variety and offers up a toasted malt background.

15781749_10154387722029790_1306416662727145995_n

Brewed with highly aromatic New Zealand hop varieties Wakatu, Orbit and Motueka, Summit Double IPA has distinct passionfruit, mango and lemon-lime flavors. Azacca, an exciting new U.S. hop, brings strong pineapple elements, too, and a new German variety, Mandarina Bavaria, provides notes of mandarin orange. Weyermann Barke Vienna malt provides support with honey and graham cracker elements, boosting the beer’s toasted nature.

“We’re aiming for a clean, assertive citrus hop bitterness that relies heavily on Weyermann Barke Vienna malt for support,” says Head Brewer Damian McConn. “With its slight caramel and bready notes, it adds some color and flavor complexity.”

Made with English Ale yeast and pouring sunrise gold in color, Double IPA boasts 105 IBU and 8.5% ABV. It’s available now in 4-packs of 16-oz. cans and on draught.

Tasting Mat with Double IPA

Because we intend to keep our resolution, we’re also releasing Summit India-Style Black Ale January 12. This powerful black ale features roasted wheat and roasted pearl barley, creating notes of espresso, dark chocolate, toffee and black cherry. U.S. hop varieties Denali and Equinox produce big pineapple and lemon-lime flavors, along with traces of grapefruit, spicy pepper and pine. Finally, a Yorkshire yeast strain provides a distinct stone fruit profile — think apricot and peach — and a hint of minerality to balance out those malts and hops.

15894935_10154426298044790_7516770899224622287_n

“With IBA, we’re trying to showcase the integration of roasted malt flavors with spicy, citrus-forward hops,” says McConn. Summit India-Style Black Ale finds inspiration among the porters and stouts exported from the UK in the 19th Century — beers that were often heavily kettle-hopped and then dry-hopped in the cask. “We’re aiming more toward that concept,” McConn adds, “but with less of the scorched, dry, acrid notes often associated with export stouts.”

India-Style Black Ale is available for a limited time on draught and exclusively within the Summit IPA Collection, a 12-pack of 12-oz. bottles offering up A World of Hops All in One Box. In addition to the Black Ale, the IPA collection contains Sága IPA, Horizon Red IPA and True Brit IPA.

OUR STORY

It takes adventurous spirit and irrepressible ingenuity to do things the Guinness way. From our humble beginnings in 1759 to the present day, we’ve gone to extraordinary lengths to bring you exceptional beer. But, while many milestones mark the way on our long and illustrious path, we’re not ones to rest on our laurels. As we like to put it: our greatest work is yet to come.

OUR CRAFT

It takes bold brewers to brew bold beers. Those prepared to go to lengths that others wouldn’t to perfect their craft. In 1759, Arthur Guinness took out a 9000-year lease on a brewery; our brewers then brought you the blackest beer with the most colorful flavor, and braved the perils of the high seas to transport it across the globe. The pioneering methods of our predecessors have been handed down and tirelessly advanced from generation to generation and they never stop evolving. Which is just as well, as we’ve got a whole lot more beer to brew.

Snow…Snow…Snow… We woke up to more snow today. I need an escape!

Samuel Adams recently launched a new beer called Hopscape. The name “Hopscape” is just that, a hoppy escape from the cold and snow of the long winter months. Four types of West Coast hops add bold notes of pine and juicy grapefruit to this deep golden wheat ale, for a crisp flavor that’s a refreshing escape from winter’s lingering chill.

Food Pairings:

The citrusy, piney, and resinous notes that the hops contribute to this beer make it the perfect pairing for spicy foods, while its crisp wheat character balances the spice. The peppery, allspice complexity of jerk chicken enhances the hop profile in this beer, while buffalo cucumbers’ mixture of heat and coolness mirror the beer’s balance between malt and hops.

Fulton Brewing Launches New Brand: Standard Lager

September 7, 2016

Fulton Brewing Looks to Set Standard With a New Lager

Fulton Brewing is launching a new brand: Standard Lager. Standard Lager is genuine all-malt beer, made from 2-row barley malt, American hops, and Pilsner yeast. We sat down with Ben Flattum, Fulton Brewing’s Twin Cities Market Manager to learn more.

13887116_847246455377521_2726260660491356442_n

MN Beer Activists: What is Standard Lager?
Ben Flattum: Standard is our new year-round lager, it’s not just a beer for “beer people”, it’s a beer for PEOPLE. Period.

MNBA: Why a Lager?
Ben: When we looked at making a crushable affordable alternative to a lot of beers out there, a lager made perfect sense. It’s a familiar term for most folks and it leaves the cleanest finish possible. We have so much respect for brewers that can execute a clean lager, something that takes a lot of skill and consistency in a brewery. We’ve been wanting to make one forever, but with our additional tank space we have at our NE Mpls production spot, it finally made sense for us.

MNBA: But aren’t all lagers just fizzy yellow water?
Ben: The perception is obviously out there, but given that it’s just a yeast variety there are so many opportunities for more flavor than what the big guys have defined as a “lager” for most people. Given our 100% malt bill, with no adjuncts, and a solid American hop profile, this beer will stand out as flavor filled and drinkable as any beer you can get.

15253564_938700969565402_8074251233448175266_n

MNBA: A new brand under the Fulton flag? Similar to Sam Adams under Boston Beer Co?
Ben: More of an extension of Fulton than a new brand. We wanted to represent how approachable the beer was, without scaring folks off that are leery of trying Craft Beer. The branding is clean and straightforward, much like the beer itself. Firestone Walker has it figured out with their “805 Beer” brand extension and we are following in their footsteps.

MNBA: Couldn’t you just release Fulton Lager?
Ben: We absolutely could, and the beer is definitely everything Fulton represents. It’s a great representation of the style, clean and balanced. But we want to branch out beyond the current group of amazing Fulton loyalists, and this was a great way to do it.

15578934_953035104798655_1846972109982470295_n

MNBA: Can we expect more brands from Fulton?
Ben: Maybe something focused on sour or wild beer? — Fun fact, we actually have been working on our Mixed Culture Fermentation project at our downtown location for over a year. There are two different beers, almost ready to go. The other one, Tanager, is a 100% Barrel Fermented Brett IPA. We use some amazing strains of Brett, and it has an insane tropical flavor all around. It’s a year-round beer in our taproom and we hope to build on it some more. Definitely worth the trip.

MNBA: What is the concept behind the “standard” branding?
Ben: We wanted a classic look to a beer meant for everyone. In our mind, this beer is the “Standard” for what an easy drinking lager tastes like, and didn’t want to muddle it with an overly-complicated logo. The simplicity and clean nature of that logo is what makes it stand out, much like the beer itself. The tagline fits it so well, “Extraordinarily Uncomplicated” and the logo flies along that line.

“Long Route” Peanut Butter Porter

Empyrean’s Newest Year-Round Beer

Empyrean Brewing Co. is launching Long Route Peanut Butter Porter, an incredibly satisfying and highly demanded porter that will join the brewery’s year-round lineup. Craft drinkers can find Long Route on retail shelves in the fall, 2016.

The Long Route logo features a meandering path, or labyrinth, which is an ancient metaphor for wholeness. As one walks the in and out following circular pattern in a meditative state, the labyrinth serves as a physical representation of the journey to the center of your mind and back out into the world with a broadened understanding of yourself.

emp-longrout-tt-with-bottle

“We chose the labyrinth symbol and the name Long Route because it fits with our brewery’s brand story that humanity is curious by nature.” said Rich Chapin, Head Brewer at Empyrean.

“We’re all on a pilgrimage towards enlightenment and eternal happiness. So why not enjoy that journey with a beer in hand?”

With the delightful aroma of a peanut butter cup, this beer maintains a porter backbone with twisting layers of chocolate, peanut butter and toast. Malt forward with very little bite, Long Route is 6% alcohol, 20 IBUs and 14.6o OG.

Long Route Peanut Butter Porter will be available throughout Empyrean Brewing Company’s Midwest distribution footprint in 6-pack bottles and on draught.
